How do you win Defenders of Hogwarts?

Defenders of Hogwarts · a practical answer for your next game.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A House player wins by collecting two Defence Shields. Each shield costs a Library Book, a Parchment Scroll and the Dark Detector or D.A. Coin depicted on that shield. Dark Arts has a different objective: all three Progress Tokens plus the required pawns together at its assigned location.

Based on the publisher’s rulebook ↗

What do I need for a Defence Shield?

HOUSE OBJECTIVE 2 DEFENCE SHIELDS
Library Book+Parchment Scroll+Depicted item*
At a Defence Shield Space → exchange the items for 1 Shield

* Dark Detector or D.A. Coin, as shown on that space’s shield. Repeat to collect two shields; check the full endgame rules.

Choose which shield you are working toward before planning your route. Check its third-item symbol: owning a D.A. Coin does not satisfy a shield that asks for the Dark Detector.

Where do the three items come from?

This is a planning checklist, not a mandatory order of actions. Match it to your hand and board position.

How do I get a Library Book?

Visit the Library with a House pawn. If you do not already have a Library Book, choose one of the two face-up Book Cards, resolve its effect and any resulting effects, and place it on your player board. Refill the empty display slot.

You can hold only one Library Book at a time. After spending it on a shield, plan another Library visit for your second shield.

How do I get a Parchment Scroll?

Have your pawns occupy two of the three places on your House Location Cards at the same time. Reveal the two matching cards, return them to the bottom of their deck and take a Scroll. This is a free action.

After your first Scroll, draw two replacement Location Cards. After your second, also return the remaining Location Card; you do not receive any more.

Common mistake

Visiting the two places on different turns is not enough if your first pawn has already left. Check your current pawn positions against both cards.

Dark Detector or D.A. Coin: which route?

Dark Detector

Advance on the Loyalty Track. Reaching at least its fifth space and leading the other Houses grants the Detector; the rulebook specifies ties and the final-space transfer.

D.A. Coin

The Room of Requirement appears when a House first reaches or passes Loyalty space five. Enter the revealed Room to take a Coin. You can hold one at a time.

Loyalty can come from marked board spaces, relevant card effects or an advanced Learn acquisition. When everyone drops below space five, the Room disappears again.

Spending the Detector on a shield drops your Loyalty three spaces and returns or transfers the Detector as specified in the rulebook. Account for that before planning the next shield.

A worked second-shield check

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

You already have one shield, a Book, a Scroll and a D.A. Coin. Move to a Shield Space that depicts the Coin and exchange those three items. You now have two shields and win. If that space instead depicts the Detector, your Coin cannot replace it.

What about Dark Arts or a draw?

Dark Arts must complete both its token and location objectives. Reaching the last track space alone is not victory: it starts a final-hand phase. If nobody completes their objective before those hands are exhausted, the game is a draw.
